Once we reach cruising altitude, we no longer need to worry about the traffic, the annoying colleague or the telephone’s bill. Our destination, previously distant and hidden behind hills and mountains, is now very clear.

Seen from above, the steep ups and downs of our earthbound paths that so much trouble us will look like gentle slopes, nothing more than maybe necessary hiccups on the way to achieving our goals. But once we elevate our vantage point and start to understand the purpose in our life, the long term vision of our company or the meaning of our job, we'll find out that suddenly everything makes more sense and we'll start giving less importance to our daily struggles, and somehow accept them. Often trivial, sometimes demotivating, almost always distractions on the way to fulfilling our lives or careers, be it building a family, completing a project or simply doing our job.

I like to think of all that is beneath the cloud line as the big and small problems in our day-to-day lives, both professional and personal. The aircraft itself seems to feel the same, as it stops growling and creaking and comes to a stable and comforting humming just before the seat belt sign goes off. The taxi ride, the endless queues, the passport checks, the broken automatic gate, the delays etc, all of this vanishes like in a morning dream as I am suddenly confronted with crisp glimpses of infinite horizons and otherworldly sunsets.

I really enjoy that moment when the airplane rises above the clouds, that short transition period where the turbulences, noises and busy images of the world below disappear and leave space to tranquillity, blue skies and breath-taking views. be bored, why not? I think a lot of creativity can be unlocked by being bored.

Being blessed with a busy job, I welcome those few hours of absolute peace when nobody can contact me (until that not-so-distant time when free WiFi will be available on board!) and I can do whatever I want – well, at least within the constraints of a 15 inch wide seat: work, watch a film, read a magazine or just rest my head and. Secondly, I feel very relaxed when I think that I have a long-haul flight ahead of me. If possible, I avoid planning to have a business meeting on the same day I arrive, so I can travel very light – shorts, T-shirt and sandals, whatever the season, and imagineI could join that army. For a start, being in an airport always makes me feel as if I am on holiday I like to observe the people that are about to spend a week somewhere nice, with kids running around in snorkelling gear, or those returning with big sunburns and huge smiles on their faces.

It shines another light on one’s own mortality.Contrary to a lot of people I know, I really enjoy the full experience, airports included.

There is a sense of irony to experience, and some comfort to be found, when overthinking how humanity has always been busy envisioning its end. The war to end all wars, learning to love that atomic bomb, the millennium bug, the great replacement theory, climate change, and the current wave of mass extinction. Worlds destroyed by strife, conflicting visions, slave-trade, technological advancements, failing bureaucracies, social mobility, human desire, greed, mass-consumerism, fate, and/or a combination of the above.Įach of these worlds comes with its own apocalyptical narrative. From a world filled with terra incognita, to a world where even facts no longer are true. From the revolutions that broke up medieval caste systems, to the dissolution of the communist states of Eastern Europe. From the end of our nomadic lifestyle, to the fall of the great city of Rome. Many worlds have ended before, and many more will end before long.
